Sweet Chestnut has produced several valuable flower essences such as Bach’s for extreme anguish and Green Man’s for focusing and centring in the present moment, release of guilt and finding ways out of difficult situations. Moss from the roots of this ancient specimen in the grounds of Buckland Hall formed the basis of my own essence for those whose lives are being stolen by responsibilities, duties, family or work. Now a solution of boiled sweet chestnut leaves has been found to cure MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). The treatment, which contains anti-bacterial ursene and oleanene compounds has long been used in Mediterranean countries to treat skin infections and inflammation. It acts, not by killing the bacterium involved, but by shutting off its ability to produce the toxins that cause tissue and red blood cell damage – a very profound, gentle and almost essence-like way of dealing with an extreme human state.
